Jennifer Laycock, otherwise known as The Lactivist, has been silent for a month.
Jennifer has been blogging regularly since November 2005 on issues related to lactivism, breastfeeding, exclusively pumping, and general fun parenting stuff. She started her blog as an experiment related to her job as the Search Engine Guide. As a result, due to my personal interest in lactivism and professional interest in search engine optimization, I have a stalkeresque fascination with everything Jennifer writes.
Over the years, whenever my friends and I come across another article about a nursing mom that was told to stop nursing in public, we would turn to see what Jennifer had to say about it and what her readers had to say about it. Sure, there are other places that people discuss these issues, like on the Mothering forums, Kellymom forums, and so on. But we always wanted to know what Jennifer thought. And then to consider whether we agreed or not. I didn’t always agree with her on every issue (e.g. Weaner-gate), but at the end of the day we were fighting for the same thing. We watched in a state of shock (and a few giggles) as she was sued by the Pork Board. She voiced strong opinions on the effectiveness of nurse-ins and the right to nurse in change rooms at department stores.
But since June 16, Jennifer hasn’t had anything to say about breastfeeding. I still regularly read her search engine blog, so I know she is still alive and not stranded on a deserted island (unless she has her laptop and a WiFi connection). Perhaps it is because she is no longer nursing. Perhaps she wants to spend more time with her family instead of fighting the fight. Perhaps she has run out of things to say. Or perhaps it is because her brain is full or empty, as it might be.
Whatever the case may be, Jennifer, thanks for all the posts over the years and if you do come back, I’ll keep reading. If not, I’ll see you at the Search Engine Guide.
