Conferences, Conferences...

Looks like I'm entering conference season. I think I'll be at about one conference per month from July through to November. I hope to catch up with some of you at some of the conferences that I'm attending.

Women's Worlds

Women's WorldsWomen's Worlds is a huge international feminist conference that is held in a different city once every three years. This year it was held in Ottawa and I jumped at the chance to not only attend, but to cover the conference on a media pass for Care2.  If you want to hear about some of the sessions that I attended, you can check out my p0sts about the conference.

Women's Worlds: Ottawa Welcomes International Feminist Conference (introduction to this great conference, which combines academic and grass roots work, and aims to be very inclusive, although there were some complaints that there was a very anti-sex worker and anti-sex work atmosphere at the conference)

Are Women and Girls Groomed to Choose Oppression? (pondering this as my four year old daughter sang "I'm a Barbie Girl, in a Barbie World" to me this afternoon...sigh)

Women and Leadership in Politics and Business (Great panel, but I had to contain myself when the executive from McDonald's talked about what a great company it is)

What is Maternal Feminism? (on the great work of Andrea O'Reilly and others)

Women's Worlds: Breaking Ground (on the closing plenary session about what ground still needs to be broken and what a women's world would look like)

BlogHer '11

Next month, I'm heading to San Diego for BlogHer' 11. I'm honoured to have been selected as one of this year's Voices of the Year, which means that I'll be getting up on stage to share one of my posts with potentially thousands of people. I can't tell you which post it is (and I will not respond to guesses!), but it is a piece that I'm really proud of.

There are many, many other amazing bloggers on the list, including fellow Canadian bloggers Kate from Sweet Salty and Bon Stewart from Crib Chronicles and some of my other blogging friends like Miss Britt and Cecily Kellogg. Several of the posts that I nominated were also listed as honorees, including Katherine Stone's post On Blogging, Popularity Contests and Why I QUIT!, Neil Kramer's post The Inconsiderate Breastfeeding Woman, and Karen Walrond's video called a response to satoshi kanazawa, psychology today, and the horses they rode in on.

More to come...

As I attend these conferences, I'll try to share the interesting things that I learn and experience. I hope to see some of you at the conferences in person too.

So upset that I won't be hearing you speak at Blogher. It's the first one I am missing in years. Waaah.

Enjoy the conferences and good luck!! I can't wait to read what you share as they each come about.

How do you do all these conferences with kids? I haven't been able to go to any since having kids.

I guess that depends on what your reason is for not doing them. I have a partner who is a co-parent and is fully capable of taking care of the kids when I am away. In terms of being okay leaving the kids, I wrote about that last year: http://www.phdinparenting.com/2010/02/10/i-left-my-kids-for-five-days-and-it-was-okay/

Hoping to meet you at BlogHer this year! The "Voices" session is one of the things I'm really looking forward to at this point. Grappling with my discomfort at the amount of marketing going on around the conference otherwise...

If you avoid the hall where all the sponsors are you should be mostly good. There will still be some mention of the sponsors at keynote speeches and you'll probably see some signage at the lunches, but most of them should be tucked away. Go to the sessions, attend geek bars that you think will be useful, listen to the international scholarship bloggers, attend the community keynote ("voices"), have fun at some of the parties, and I guarantee you'll have a great time.

I hope we eventually end up at the same conference, Annie! What are the other ones on your list for this fall?

July 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

So far, #140 Conf Ontario, Blissdom Canada, and possibly Blog World Expo LA.
